America 250 celebrated

Mountain View celebrated America’s 250th Independence Day with special activities combined with the traditional patriotic parade on Main Street and cold watermelon, ice cream and hot dogs served in the courtyard.

The Stone County Historical Society, Mountain View Area Chamber of Commerce, local officials and others presented a program on the courthouse stage that included recognition of revolutionary descendants, patriotic selections by a Mountain View High School Band ensemble and elementary students, a salute to the Declaration of Independence and a flag retirement ceremony.

There was also dedication of a Liberty Tree sponsored by the Historical Society, saluting history of The Liberty Tree in Boston, where, In 1765, colonists staged the first act of defiance against the British government. Elm trees were planted across the country as part of the America 250 celebration.

Behavioral Health Group won first place for parade floats with its rocket entry. Second place went to Stone County Saddle Club and third to Stone County Honor Guard.
